Can Glaucoma Be Prevented with Early Detection?

Glaucoma often develops quietly, with no pain or noticeable symptoms, until it has already begun to affect peripheral vision. While you can't always prevent it, catching it early can slow its progression and protect your vision before serious damage occurs.

At Advanced Vision & Achievement Center in Phoenix, AZ, Dr. Neha Amin and Dr. Mary Hardy specialize in detecting early changes in intraocular pressure, often before any vision loss happens. Schedule an eye exam now to learn more about your personal risk for glaucoma.

What causes glaucoma?

So, what causes glaucoma in the first place? In most cases, it develops when fluid builds up in the eye faster than it can drain, causing intraocular pressure to rise. Over time, this increased pressure damages the optic nerve, which is responsible for sending visual information from the eye to the brain.

Because this damage happens gradually, many patients don't notice any change in their vision until a significant portion of the optic nerve has already been affected. Family history, age, and certain medical conditions can all increase the risk of developing glaucoma symptoms, though it can occur in patients without any obvious risk factors as well.

Can glaucoma be prevented?

Glaucoma can't always be prevented, but early detection greatly improves your chances of protecting your vision long-term. A glaucoma diagnosis made early, before symptoms appear, allows treatment to begin before damage occurs. Regular eye exams are the most reliable way to catch changes early, since:

  • Glaucoma symptoms often go unnoticed at first: Vision loss typically starts at the edges before affecting central vision, so patients rarely notice a problem on their own in the early stages.
  • Peripheral vision loss is usually gradual: Because the brain compensates for small changes, patients often don't realize their side vision has narrowed until it's significantly affected.

Catching these changes early through regular checkups is what makes prevention of further vision loss possible, even when the initial development of glaucoma can't be avoided.

What treatments can manage glaucoma?

Once a glaucoma diagnosis is confirmed, several treatment paths can help manage the condition and protect remaining vision. Each approach focuses on lowering intraocular pressure to prevent further damage to the optic nerve. Many patients in the early stages of glaucoma are able to slow or halt vision loss using daily prescription eye drops alone.

For patients whose condition has progressed further, more involved options, like minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, laser procedures, or traditional surgery, may be recommended. Dr. Amin and Dr. Hardy can make effective recommendations based on each patient's individual eye health.
